What changed with ChatGPT agent

The original ChatGPT agent mode is no longer available, according to OpenAI’s help center. It recommends Work for longer, multi-step tasks. Compare that current product with OperatorNest on provider choice, permissions and memory portability.

Work brings longer tasks, connected apps, files and deliverables into ChatGPT. Its current help page also documents browser and desktop work with permission; a logged-in workflow is not ruled out as our earlier copy suggested.

Model choice: OpenAI’s own models, then and now

Work offers eligible OpenAI models through a picker, with GPT-6.1 Sol rolling out alongside other documented choices. No external-provider option is documented. OperatorNest lets you choose providers or bring your own subscription or key while retaining memory and task history.

Weigh that even if you’re happy with OpenAI’s models today. A provider you like this year isn’t a lifetime commitment, and an operator that moves with you saves re-teaching a new tool everything the old one knew.

Where each one reaches you

ChatGPT Work lives inside Desktop and eligible web/mobile access; connected apps and task triggers, a natural fit if that’s already where you work. OperatorNest meets you in WhatsApp, Slack, iMessage, Telegram, email or the web, and the reply returns through whichever one you used to ask. That counts most for a task that starts as a text to a colleague rather than a session you sit down to run inside one app.

Background work, approvals and memory

Work supports schedules and event triggers as well as longer jobs. Users define check-ins and grant browser/desktop permissions. ChatGPT’s general memory controls support review, correction and deletion; these are distinct from Work project context, for which a portable export was not verified.

OperatorNest keeps recurring tasks and monitoring running while you’re away, holds sending, paying, deleting and publishing behind an approval every time, and logs a receipt for each action. You can read, correct, export or delete memory, and none of it depends on OpenAI, xAI or any other single vendor staying the course.

Moving recurring work between products

Before moving a recurring task, record its instructions, connected accounts and approval settings. Work documents both schedules and event triggers; re-create the task deliberately and check its first run rather than assuming settings transfer.

Where ChatGPT Work is the better pick

If most of your work already happens inside ChatGPT and you’re comfortable with OpenAI’s models, ChatGPT Work is a direct, integrated way to hand off longer research and drafting jobs without adding another app to your day. It also has Codex-style execution for technical work, a strength if code is part of what you’re delegating.

Switching without losing your instructions

Before moving recurring work, record its instructions, connected accounts and project context. ChatGPT has general memory controls, but a cross-provider Work context import was not verified. Move one task at a time, compare the results and approval behavior, and retire the old schedule once the replacement works.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT agent still available?

No. OpenAI's help center says the original mode is no longer available and recommends Work for longer, multi-step tasks.

What replaced ChatGPT agent?

ChatGPT Work, launched alongside GPT-5.6 in July 2026. It blends Codex-style execution with ChatGPT for multi-hour jobs, still running only OpenAI's own models.

Can I use a different AI model with ChatGPT Work?

Work has a picker for eligible OpenAI models, but no documented external-provider option. OperatorNest lets you pick GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Llama or another provider per task.

What should I check before relying on either one?

Check your plan, workspace permissions and the browser or desktop access a task needs. Work supports these tools, but availability differs by surface and account.
