The AI operator glossary
Short, plain definitions of the terms you'll meet when you start handing work to an AI agent.
- agent approval gateAn agent approval gate is a point in an AI agent's task where it stops and presents a specific decision to you, such as sending, paying, booking, deleting or publishing, and waits for your approval before continuing.
- AI agent memoryAI agent memory is the durable information an agent retains between tasks, such as your preferences, past decisions and ongoing context, that you can typically inspect, correct or delete rather than having to repeat every time.
- AI agent receiptAn AI agent receipt is a record attached to a task showing what was requested, what actions the agent took, what it accessed, what you approved, and what the final result was, so you can verify the work afterward.
- AI operatorAn AI operator is an AI agent that works through tasks on your behalf over time and across tools, pausing for your approval before anything consequential and leaving a record of what it did.
- always-on AI agentAn always-on AI agent continues working on tasks between your messages, picking up schedules and triggers on its own, so work progresses while you're away and results are ready when you check back in.
- bring your own key (BYOK)Bring your own key (BYOK) is a setup where you connect your own AI provider account or API key to power an agent's model access, so usage is billed to your account directly instead of bundled into the product's price.
- independent AI agentAn independent AI agent is an AI agent that runs on models from any provider, bills usage to keys you hold, keeps a memory you can export, and asks your approval before anything consequential.
- model-agnostic AI agentA model-agnostic AI agent is an AI agent that isn't built around a single AI provider's model, and can use models from different companies, chosen per task, without losing its memory or task history when it switches.
- personal AI agentA personal AI agent is an AI agent scoped to one individual's own accounts, preferences and recurring tasks, using their personal context to handle work like research, scheduling and follow-ups on their behalf.
