MCP config generator

Create or convert a local MCP server configuration for a documented client.

Example local server: A filesystem server named files with command npx and a workspace argument.

Server details

Never paste real secrets here. Use a client-supported variable placeholder, then set the value in that client or your environment.

Config file

macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Example local server ready.

This is the manual local file documented in the MCP Python SDK. Claude Desktop also offers local Desktop Extensions.

MCP Python SDK, checked 28 September 2026

How it works

The selected client determines the file path and server object shape.

Conversion reads one named server from supported JSON. It never runs a command or contacts the server.

Limits

  • This tool checks JSON syntax and supported fields, not whether a server starts or a client connects.
  • Claude Desktop remote servers must be added in Settings > Connectors; its local config file does not connect to remote URLs.
  • Windsurf details come from redirected legacy Cascade documentation; verify the installed app before using that output.

Common questions

Can I put a remote MCP URL in Claude Desktop’s config file?
No. Add remote servers in Settings > Connectors. The generated Claude Desktop file covers local command servers.
Will this check that my server runs?
No. It produces JSON and checks supported fields. Start the server in your client and inspect its own connection result.
Can I convert an existing config?
Yes. Paste a JSON config with mcpServers or VS Code servers. The tool imports one server at a time; review its command, URL, and environment variables before saving.
